VitaShift: My Experience Developing an Innovative Scheduling Solution for Vitalité Health Network
Identifying the Problem: The Challenge of Workforce Scheduling
Working within Vitalité Health Network, one of the largest healthcare networks in New Brunswick, Canada, I noticed a major operational challenge—inefficient workforce scheduling. The current system made it difficult for staff to manage their shifts effectively, leading to scheduling conflicts, understaffed shifts, and an overall decrease in operational efficiency.
This issue was particularly pressing for EKG Healthcare, a company contracted with the network, which faced significant difficulties in aligning their workforce with the hospital’s scheduling demands. The existing scheduling process lacked flexibility, automation, and real-time updates, creating inefficiencies that affected both staff and patient care.

The Birth of VitaShift: A Smart Scheduling Solution
Seeing this gap, I took the initiative to design and develop VitaShift, an intelligent scheduling system aimed at streamlining workforce management and improving staff coordination within the hospital network.
VitaShift was built to:
- Automate shift allocation, ensuring optimal staffing at all times.
- Improve real-time scheduling visibility, reducing last-minute changes and conflicts.
- Enhance workforce efficiency, allowing staff to swap shifts, request time off, and access schedules seamlessly.
- Integrate seamlessly with existing hospital management systems, minimizing the need for manual adjustments.
The Implementation: Presenting VitaShift to Vitalité’s Leadership
Developing VitaShift was a challenging yet rewarding process. I conducted in-depth research, analyzed scheduling patterns, and collaborated with healthcare professionals to design a system tailored to real-world needs.
I had the unique opportunity to present my solution to the General Director of IT at Vitalité Health Network, alongside key executives and decision-makers. The experience was both exciting and demanding, as I had to demonstrate the full potential of VitaShift in solving the scheduling challenges they faced.
The Outcome: Recognition and Impact
The leadership team at Vitalité Health Network was highly impressed with VitaShift’s capabilities. While an existing contract with another company prevented them from fully implementing my solution, they acknowledged the value it brought to workforce management.
As a result, I was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for my contribution—a moment of immense pride in my professional journey. My work provided valuable insights that helped Vitalité rethink and refine their scheduling strategies, proving that innovation in healthcare operations can drive real improvements.
